The Linangan sa Imahen, Retorika, at Anyo (LIRA), the leading organization of poets writing in Filipino, collaborates once again with the Office of Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim for this year’s Francisco Balagtas Day celebrations on April 2, 2012, 7 a.m. at the poet’s shrine at Beata St., Pandacan, Manila, where the legendary poet and author of Florante at Laura lived.

To be unveiled in the event is the new Balagtas marker, the revision of which was initiated by LIRA founder and adviser, National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario (the poet Rio Alma). Following the unveiling is Almario’s public lecture on Balagtas titled “Ang Bayan ni Balagtas”.

LIRA poets Dr. Michael M. Coroza, Dr. Vim Nadera, and LIRA officers Phillip Kimpo and Louie Jon Sanchez will read poems and excerpts from Balagtas’ works. Performing musical numbers are Joey Ayala and University of the Philippines College of Arts and Letters Dean Elena Mirano.

During the event, LIRA and Mayor Lim will also launch the Andres Bonifacio Sesquicentennial programs, which will commence next year.

The Francisco Balagtas Day celebration has become an annual pilgrimage for LIRA for the past two years. In 2009, at the height of the National Artists scandal, LIRA mounted a symbolic clean-up of the shrine to call for a renewed commitment in Philippine arts and culture. Last year, the organization began to work with the City of Manila in celebrating the premiere poet’s contribution in Philippine culture.

Mula sa opisyal na press release ng University of the Philippines Institute of Creative Writing.

LIKHAAN: The University of the Philippines Institute of Creative Writing (UP ICW) announces the fellows to the 51st UP National Writers Workshop to be held from April 8 to 15, 2012 in Camp John Hay, Baguio City. The fellows and associates of the UP ICW selected thirteen mid-career writers to participate in the prestigious workshop. This year’s workshop director is award-winning novelist Charlson Ong.

This year’s fellows for English are Jose Marte Abueg, Nikki Alfar, Maribel Kawsek, Priscilla Supnet Macansantos, Andrea Pasion, Rafael Antonio San Diego, and Jojo Gumpal Silvestre.  Fellows for Filipino are John Barrios, U Z. Eliserio, Phillip Yerro Kimpo, Carlos M. Piocos III, Louie Jon A. Sanchez, and Rody Vera.

The workshop panelists are all advisers, fellows, and associates of the ICW.  In addition to Charlson Ong, the panelists are National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario, ICW director Jose Y. Dalisay, Jr., Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo, Neil Garcia, Vim Nadera, Jun Cruz Reyes, Roland Tolentino, Romulo Baquiran Jr., and Ricky de Ungria.  A regional associate of the ICW, Dr. de Ungria will deliver a public lecture entitled “The View from the Margins” on April 12, Thursday, at 1 PM in Juan Luna Hall of UP Baguio.

The UP National Writers Workshop is the country’s only national writing workshop that provides a venue for advanced writers to exchange ideas on their craft and their current literary projects.  Previous manuscripts presented and discussed in the workshop’s current format have gone on to be published, staged, or filmed, gaining both local and international recognition.  Prior to the new format, the UP ICW held the annual UP National Writers Workshop for the country’s most promising aspiring writers from 1965 to 2005.  Through the years, the writing centers of other universities have instituted their own workshops for beginning writers, thus freeing the UP ICW to address other concerns.

To qualify for the UP National Writers Workshop, applicants (1) must be writers in English or Filipino; (2) must have attended at least one creative writing workshop (national/regional, including the UP National Writers Workshops), or earned a degree in Creative Writing/Malikhaing Pagsulat, or won at least one national/international literary award; (3) must have had a stage- or screenplay produced, or enough poetry, fiction, or creative nonfiction published in reputable collections or anthologies, journals, magazines, or refereed Internet web magazines to produce a book. Some of these qualifications may be waived in exceptionally meritorious cases, with the unanimous concurrence of the UP ICW Fellows, Associates, and Advisers.
